The word 'blog' began as 'weblog', coined in 1997 and shortened to 'blog' two years later.

Jorn Barger used 'weblog' in 1997 to describe his online log of links. In 1999, Peter Merholz joked on his own site that he would pronounce it 'wee-blog,' or 'we blog,' and the shortened word stuck.
