1999

Designed by Shigetaka Kurita for a Japanese mobile carrier, each was a tiny 12-by-12-pixel image. MoMA acquired the set in 2016, recognising these humble pixel grids as a landmark in how humans communicate — the ancestors of the thousands of emoji used today.
