Toru Iwatani set out in 1980 to make an arcade game that would appeal to people beyond the young men who dominated arcades, centering it on eating rather than shooting. The rounded, mouth-open design proved instantly readable, and Pac-Man went on to become one of the most recognizable characters in all of gaming.
