America's Cold War spy satellites shot photos on physical film, then dropped the canisters from orbit to be snatched from mid-air by aircraft.

The 'Corona' program had no way to beam images home electronically, so exposed film was ejected in capsules that parachuted back toward Earth, where specially rigged planes tried to hook them mid-descent. Early attempts failed repeatedly before the technique worked, delivering the first satellite photographs of denied territory.
